History of The Hans Christian Andersen Story Telling Center

Since 1956, on Saturdays during the summer, New York City´s children have clustered around Hans Christian Andersen´s statue near Conservatory Pond in Central Park to hear his and others' fairytales, folk stories, and stories, told by a dedicated group of professional storytellers.

The Hans Christian Andersen Storytelling Center is a New York not-for profit corporation that administrates and sponsors these weekly story telling sessions.

In 1998, the Storytelling Center was honored to receive the Hans Christian Andersen Prize from the "Hans Christian Andersen Priskomite" of Odense, Denmark, the place where Hans Christian Andersen was born in 1804. In 1999, the lord Mayor of Odense, visited the Storytelling Center.

In 2016 the 60th anniversary of the story telling program was celebrated. Opening day included storytelling by Danish Consul General, Anne Dorte Riggelsen. In addition, the anniversary was celebrated by the delivery of a fairy tale cake from Cake Boss in Central Park, and our organization was featured in an episode of The Cake Boss TV Show.

bookFor our continuing support of these programs and payment of our story tellers and monitors we rely on donations from special sponsors and the public in general. The Hans Christian Andersen Storytelling Center is approved (for federal tax purposes) as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt corporation and donations are tax deductible. The directors, officers and other volunteers contribute their free time to support the Storytelling Center.
